A guide to cultural and sporting events in the Subcarpathian Region:
Subcarpathia is a place rich in tradition, culture and wonderful happenings – from music festivals up to folk and film events to region. Here’s a list of annual culture events you should by all means attend:
January – March
- New Year’s and Winter Concerts in Rzeszów – various music concerts, from classical music to jazz, in the philharmonic and theatres.
- ‘HumanDOC’ Documentary Film Festival (Rzeszów) – social and ecological documentaries from all over the world (often in the first months of the year)
April – June
- Heritage of the Borderlands Festival – Lubaczów and the surroundings (end of July, beginning of August) – music, cuisine and traditions of the Eastern Borderlands.
- Butcher’s Run Festival – the Bieszczady Mountains (Cisna, Wetlina) – June – extreme mountain runs over distances of 48 and 80 km in the Bieszczady Mountans – a cult event amongst runners.
- International Mountain Balloon Competition ‘Balloons over Krosno’ (Krosno, May) – colourful balloons above the city and the surrounding hills, a festival of balloon flights and night shows.
- Pipe Festival – Przemyśl (June) – a unique event dedicated to the pipe-smoking tradition: parades, competitions, workshops.
- European Stadium of Culture - Rzeszów (June) – a music festival with concerts, exhibitions and performances.
July – August
- ‘Folkowisko’ Borderland Folk Culture Festival – Gorajec (July) – a unique festival being a fusion of folk music, crafts, ecology and tradition.
- ‘Dwa Oblicza’ (‘Two Faces’) Carpathian Archeological Festival – Trzcinica (‘Carpathian Troy’, July – August) – fight shows, historical reconstructions, traditional craft workshops.
- Bieszczadzkie Anioły (Bieszczady Angels) – Cisna, August – a festival of sung poetry as well as tourist and artistic singing in the Bieszczady Mountains.
- Icon Fair – Sanok (August) – a meeting with Orthodox church art and icon writing, exhibitions, concerts and debates on Eastern sacred art.
September – October
- Rzeszów Breakout Days (September) – blues and rock concerts dedicated to the memory of Tadeusz Nalepa and the Breakout Band.
November – December
- International Documentary Film Festival ‘HumanDOC’ – Rzeszów (November) – exciting films on social, ecological and migration issues.
- Jazz Bez – Przemyśl (December) – an international jazz festival with concerts at the highest level, taking place simultaneously in Poland and Ukraine.
