Dominikańska St. 1, 37-100 Łańcut
Łańcut Dominican Monastery – Walls full of history and undiscovered mysteries
Few residents of Łańcut realize that right next to the market stands a building older than the famous castle. The former Dominican monastery is one of the oldest brick monuments in the city, with a history dating back to the Middle Ages. Dominicans already lived here at the end of the 14th century, and the first mentions of their activity date back to 1378.
This place has witnessed extraordinary events. In the 16th century, the monastery was taken over by Protestants, and its walls hosted religious synods. Later, the Dominicans returned, and the Lubomirski family expanded the complex, making it one of the most important sites in the city. Today, walking down Dominikańska Street, it is easy to overlook an extraordinary detail. The walls of the former monastery are up to two meters thick in places, and the entire complex once had a defensive character. It was not just a monastery – it was also a safe refuge for residents in troubled times. Looking at its peaceful walls, it is hard to believe that over six centuries monks, soldiers, doctors, officials, and travelers have passed through them. That is why the former Dominican monastery is one of the most extraordinary and underrated places in Łańcut – a silent witness to the entire history of the city.
Beneath the former Dominican monastery are underground crypts where monks and priors of the order rest. According to local legend, as long as their remains stay in the underground chambers, Łańcut will be protected from great catastrophes and misfortunes. This is one of the most mysterious tales connected with the city's history.
